Morning.
Andy: Sergey threw something of a curved ball into the conversation half way through dinner last night by suggesting that one of the local journalists who was with us yesterday⦠in fact the guy I think I described as a bear of a man⦠might have been a government⦠how shall I put this?⦠well, a government spy on us. No point in beating about the bushes, is there?
Which obviously produced a huge amount of joking at that stage of the evening given the amount of vodka weâd had. And then of course it struck me that he quite possibly was.
It is easy to forget that the precious metals part of Norilsk Nickelâs production in particular is still pretty much a state secret. So it would make a lot of sense that someone is keeping an eye on these two foreign journalists wandering around this town. So joking aside, I canât necessarily say itâs not true.
I did also point out that the best spy on us would be Sergey himself⦠something which also caused its fair share of good humour and which I notice he didnât actually deny. Which gives you food for thoughtâ¦
It shows how easy it is, once you start thinking in those terms, to get paranoid about who is or who isnât watching you and listening to you, and you do start looking at virtually everyone you know in a different way.
So, a nice little insight into what it must have been like here up to the year 1989, I think.
Just as a little postscript to that comment, I believe that we are going to go ten-pin bowling with this gentleman this evening. Grigori, who is much better versed in these things than me, says itâs the best way of dealing with the issue. You might as well just get to know them really and not worry about it.
